Pitchfork

Pitchfork Music Festival SXSW Party Revealed!

The flyer don't lie: SXSW is getting its own miniature indoor version of the Pitchfork Music Festival! On March 16, Pitchfork, in association with our pals at Chicago booking firm The Windish Agency, is set to take over the venerable Austin venue Emo's, to present 12 of our favorite artists from the Class of 2006-07 on two stages. And just like the festival itself, the party will be an all-ages event.

Attendees will be eligible to win tickets to the actual Pitchfork Music Festival, which as previously reported, returns to Chicago's own Union Park this July 14-15. You can also expect the festival's very first lineup announcements to be made between sets from the following bands:

Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead are Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amadeo Pace. They're the rarest of things : a band whose voice has grown stronger, clearer and more distinctive with every record that they have made. Their ever-expanding and devoted fanbase will be delighted to learn that this performace heralds the arrival of a new album 23 which will be released in April 2007.

Mountain Goats
John Darnielle is one of the most imaginative lyricists of his generation. Since he sat cross-legged with an acoustic guitar in front of a boom box and pressed record for the first time - more than a decade ago - skewed characters, vibrant images and perfectly-framed narratives have flowed in their hundreds. Recent albums The Sunset Treet and Get Lonely have firmly established him as one of the most significant and influential songwriters working in America today.

Beirut
You would be forgiven for thinking Beirut's unique debut long player The Gulag Orkestar was the work of some old Russian or German veteran, coloured by a love-stricken and war-weathered history. The genius behind Beirut, however, is a 20 year-old man from Albuquerque, New Mexico : Zach Condon. The Gulag Orkestar came from nowhere to be one of the most acclaimed and exciting albums of 2006; this will be the band s first live performance of 2007.

Emma Pollock
Emma Pollock was a member of the wonderful Delgados and a founder of their pioneering Chemikal Underground record label. She s also one of the most bewitching singers and natural songwriters around, Emma has always had fans at 4AD - the idea of a solo album was first floated more than five years ago. And when The Delgados called it a day as a band in 2005, the moment had come. Her radiant debut album will be released later in 2007.

Wolf and Cub
Wolf & Cub hail from a distant place - Adelaide, Australia. Yet word about their adrenalised take on darkly psychedelic, danceable noise is spreading far afield. The band a four piece whose line-up includes two drummers have built up a dedicated live following, expanded by a show-stealing performance at the Big Day Out festival. The band s debut album Vessels is released in April 2007, preceded by the frenetic and addictive single This Mess .

Matador

MATADOR RECORDS AT SXSW

DEAD MEADOW
THE PONYS
SHEARWATER
TIMES NEW VIKING

For those of you (un)lucky enough to be heading off to Texas next month, thought I'd let you know about the Matador happenings this year. No big showcase a la previously, but still plenty to feast your ears on, including several brand new signings to the label and one band so new that they've never even been to the UK, so this is definitely a chance to catch them. Let me know if you're going along and/or if you'd like to see or interview any of these artists.

Recently announced on the Matablog is the signing of Austin-based Shearwater. Their album "Palo Santo" was released last year and will be re-issued with 5 re-recorded songs, unreleased tracks and brand new artwork. They will be playing a few shows at SXSW during a North American Tour. The band will be over in the UK this summer with a new album later in the year.

http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/?p=507

http://www.shearwatermusic.com/

Whilst Times New Viking will be promoting their recent release on Siltbreaze, "Present the Paisley Reich", the Columbus, Ohio based band have just signed a deal with Matador in anticipation of a brand new full-length at some point down the line. Their photos make them look extremely young but they play the kind of indie-rock that have you feeling nostalgic for Guided By Voices, Pavement and The Clean. Definitely one of the hotly tipped bands for this year, you should definitely try to see them if you can.

http://www.matadorrecords.com/times_new_viking/

http://www.myspace.com/timesnewviking

The Ponys, fresh off their recent string of successful London shows, will be embarking on a major US tour with no less than four appearances at SXSW (and maybe more). The album "Turn The Lights Out" is released on March 19. Hopefully you've all got copies and are able to cover in some way. They'll be back in May for a UK/Euro tour... Here are some pics from a blistering show at Sonic Cathedral at the Legion last week:

http://underexposed.org.uk/ponys/ponyssc1.htm

http://www.matadorrecords.com/the_ponys

http://www.myspace.com/theponys

And, last but by no means least, Dead Meadow debut songs from their forthcoming album, which is slated for late summer/early Autumn. Read here for stories of haunted studios and moving from Washington DC to Los Angeles - http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/?p=447. We'll be seeing them in the UK for Summer festivals.

SXSW 2007 Ever Records Showcase

EVER RECORDS are proud to announce that they will be attending South by South West and celebrating the fact with a showcase on Wednesday 14th March that will render the rest of the week an utter anticlimax (except for any events that follow that continue to involve our artists, natch). Never ones for understatement, EVER RECORDS will blow registrants away with music from CORTNEY TIDWELL, CYANN & BEN and HOWIE BECK at THE ALE HOUSE from 11pm until curfew. CORTNEY TIDWELL and CYANN & BEN will also be performing at various other locations during the course of the week.

EVER RECORDS – recently described by influential website Boomkat as “quickly becoming synonymous with high quality alternative pop music… a label to watch very closely indeed” – has established itself as a home for highly individual but wonderfully addictive music. Alongside the artists showcasing at SxSW, the label is also home to LEE HAZLEWOOD (North America, Japan & Australia), WHEAT (world excluding the USA) and ADJÁGAS (world excluding the USA) with further signings to be announced imminently.

EVER RECORDS SxSW SHOWCASE:
WEDNESDAY MARCH 14th 2007
THE ALE HOUSE, 310 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701
11pm/2300 Howie Beck
12am / 0000 Cortney Tidwell
1am / 0100 Cyann & Ben

In addition to our official showcase, Ever artists will be taking part on other events as follow:
WEDNESDAY MARCH 14TH 2007
SESAC MUSIC DAY STAGE CAFÉ, AUSTIN CONVENTION CENTER, UPPER LEVEL, BALLROOM G
5pm Cyann & Ben

FRIDAY MARCH 16TH
END OF AN EAR, 2209 SOUTH 1ST, AUSTIN, TX 78704
4pm Cyann & Ben

SATURDAY MARCH 17th
CHEAPO DISCS, 914 NORTH LAMAR BOULEVARD, AUSTIN, TX 78703
5pm Cortney Tidwell

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PARTICIPATING EVER RECORDS ARTISTS

CORTNEY TIDWELL’s debut full length DONT LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP was released in the summer of 2006 and in North America in February 2007. It’s an album in love with dynamics and harmonies, full of a feminine grace throughout which TIDWELL’s spectacular vocals swoop and soar. Comparisons have ranged from The Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser to Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Sinead O’Connor to Bjork. The Sunday Times rated her album as one of their Top Ten of 2007.
“Ms. Tidwell follows the idea of pop music as a slow, unfolding, abstract dream- the kind of thing Mazzy Star used to do well, but it’s a dream rooted in an actual place. Its layered vocal harmonies make it more recognizably American and Southern…but there’s extreme beauty in parts of it.” The New York Times

CYANN & BEN’s first album for Ever Records, SWEET BELIEFS, is an epic and yet intimate album that gives the space rock template a Gallic makeover by adding a much needed romantic grandeur. Our French heroes portray a Paris that is far from the one you see in Amelie: it’s dirty, dark and stressful as much as beautiful and SWEET BELIEFS, with its multi-layered and ambitious sweep, sounds as unsettling as it is irresistible.
“Sweet Beliefs possesses a sweeping beauty, placing Cyann & Ben squarely in a lineage that stretches back through Stereolab and Pink Floyd.” Pitchfork

HOWIE BECK released his third album at the start of 2006. It features guest appearances from Feist, Ed Harcourt and Matt Caws from Nada Surf, with whom HOWIE toured in late 2005. Recent touring (including Scandinavian shows with Josh Rouse) has helped spread the word about what Time Out London described as “an emotionally articulate, beautifully plangent pop affair”. HOWIE is currently producing the new Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene) album and working on a new album for Ever.
"Most remarkable on Howie Beck’s album, however, is the enchanting anthology of melodies that accompany these emotionally devastating stories... (an) inspired and cathartic album." Nick Kent, Liberation

Martha Wainwright

Martha returns to SxSw after a wonderful and successful year. She joins Snow Patrol at Stubb's on Friday at 1am to sing the song she's done with them on their new album (which sounds grander and more Reindeer Section than anything on their last record) and then she plays her own show at Eternal on Saturday at 11pm.

Meant to be this years Clap Your Bands Say Yeah type pitchfork-related sensation. Expect to see very dull looking men in suits looking perplexed and faking excitment at their gig. The songs sound pretty alright tho in a post-Pavement world.

"Equally brash, lovely and sorrowful, Metric's music is like an amplified Charlie Kaufman script -and it's every bit as disarming too." - Alternative Press

    A few facts:

    • Metric began 2006 supporting The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden at Mick’s personal invitation
    • The remix of US radio hit ‘Monster Hospital’ by MSTRKRFT is currently doing the rounds in the UK’s biggest clubs
    • Sold over 50,000 records in Canada.
    • Singer Emily Haines sings on some of Broken Social Scene’s biggest tunes like ‘Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl’ and early material by fellow Canucks Stars.
    • Jimmy and Emily once lived in the same NYC apartment as Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Liars.
    • Album ‘Live it Out’ released in UK in June on Drowned in Sound.
    • UK tour in May including Mtv2 stage at The Great Escape festival in Brighton.

Hear why Drowned in Sound Recordings’ (Martha Wainwright, Kaiser Chiefs debut single etc…) new signing is causing such a stir in the US on their as-featured-on-the-frontpage-of MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/metricband and watch videos at http://www.ilovemetric.com

Party Until 6am At Absolute Debauchery During SXSWSouth By Southwest is nearly upon us. As party invites have started flowing in, one in particular totally caught my eye. World’s Fair, Gothamist, Austinist and a handful of other folks have put together the ultimate kick-off party, taking place Wednesday, March 15 from 11:30pm to 6am. Yes, until 6am! The party, named Absolute Debauchery is a guaranteed way to kick your ass on the festival’s first night. Featuring performances from Gogol Bordello, ¡Forward, Russia!, Cloud Room and Grand National, it will be a late-night booty shaking good time, including an open bar. Do you have it in you to party until 6am? Here is your chance! Get your RSVP on by emailing rsvp@superalright. The good times are taking place at the Red Bull House, located at 400 Nueces Street. Make sure you pack plenty of aspirin and Alka-Seltzer for Thursday morning...

Drowned in Sound does SXSW - prologues and warnings

The hangover is a horizon away and the wolves are begging me to play in the traffic. Drowned in Sound (or in less pretentious first person DiS Founder Sean Adams) is currently looking for its passport and wondering where the time will come to wash festering underwear in the next 9 days amongst checking out nearly 3000 bands to try to work out who to see. We realise we're not alone.

The idea of this blog is simple. We're gonna give away what we think is worth seeing and collate together the very best information regarding parties and showcases from the floods of information currently hitting the web. If you recommend other stuff, just say. If you're in a band and think we might like you, then maybe drop us an email. Bare in mind DiS is the label that discoveredand kicked-started the Kaiser Chiefs career and Martha Wainwright and has a roster that boasts canadian rock sensation Metric and some might say the most beautiful band in Europe, some say the world, Jeniferever. So the bar is set rather, unnaturally, high. We mostly heart (and recommend thing in red) things that sound like Elliott Smith backed by Spirtualized, or Cat Power fronting Explosions in the Sky or The Shins atop a messy mountain of Les Savy Fav fans and Radio Dept's fuzzy feedback. Despite that we're not afraid of hooks and chaos. We're excited about seeing pirate ship sinkers Man, Man - if that helps at all?

Enough meandering introduction. We'll get on with updates tomorrow. Or biw,

For more goto http://www.drownedinsound.com or http://www.disrecords.com or even Sean's personal myspace http://www.myspace.com/disboy .

And there's a DiS podcast that you can subscribe to by searching iTunes for "Drowned in Sound" or goto http://www.drownedinsound.com/radio we're doing a special SXSW preview show for your trip there next week.
