Pitchfork
The flyer don't lie: SXSW is getting its own miniature indoor version of the Pitchfork Music Festival! On March 16, Pitchfork, in association with our pals at Chicago booking firm The Windish Agency, is set to take over the venerable Austin venue Emo's, to present 12 of our favorite artists from the Class of 2006-07 on two stages. And just like the festival itself, the party will be an all-ages event.
Attendees will be eligible to win tickets to the actual Pitchfork Music Festival, which as previously reported, returns to Chicago's own Union Park this July 14-15. You can also expect the festival's very first lineup announcements to be made between sets from the following bands:
>> Emo's
Girl Talk [5:30 p.m.]
Menomena [4:30 p.m.]
Rjd2 [3:30 p.m.]
The Ponys [2:30 p.m.]
The Pipettes [1:30 p.m.]

Fujiya & Miyagi [3:00 p.m.]

Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead are Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amadeo Pace. They're the rarest of things : a band whose voice has grown stronger, clearer and more distinctive with every record that they have made. Their ever-expanding and devoted fanbase will be delighted to learn that this performace heralds the arrival of a new album 23 which will be released in April 2007.
Mountain Goats
John Darnielle is one of the most imaginative lyricists of his generation. Since he sat cross-legged with an acoustic guitar in front of a boom box and pressed record for the first time - more than a decade ago - skewed characters, vibrant images and perfectly-framed narratives have flowed in their hundreds. Recent albums The Sunset Treet and Get Lonely have firmly established him as one of the most significant and influential songwriters working in America today.
Beirut
You would be forgiven for thinking Beirut's unique debut long player The Gulag Orkestar was the work of some old Russian or German veteran, coloured by a love-stricken and war-weathered history. The genius behind Beirut, however, is a 20 year-old man from Albuquerque, New Mexico : Zach Condon. The Gulag Orkestar came from nowhere to be one of the most acclaimed and exciting albums of 2006; this will be the band s first live performance of 2007.
Emma Pollock
Emma Pollock was a member of the wonderful Delgados and a founder of their pioneering Chemikal Underground record label. She s also one of the most bewitching singers and natural songwriters around, Emma has always had fans at 4AD - the idea of a solo album was first floated more than five years ago. And when The Delgados called it a day as a band in 2005, the moment had come. Her radiant debut album will be released later in 2007.
Wolf and Cub
Wolf & Cub hail from a distant place - Adelaide, Australia. Yet word about their adrenalised take on darkly psychedelic, danceable noise is spreading far afield. The band a four piece whose line-up includes two drummers have built up a dedicated live following, expanded by a show-stealing performance at the Big Day Out festival. The band s debut album Vessels is released in April 2007, preceded by the frenetic and addictive single This Mess .

Matador
For those of you (un)lucky enough to be heading off to Texas next month, thought I'd let you know about the Matador happenings this year. No big showcase a la previously, but still plenty to feast your ears on, including several brand new signings to the label and one band so new that they've never even been to the UK, so this is definitely a chance to catch them. Let me know if you're going along and/or if you'd like to see or interview any of these artists.
Recently announced on the Matablog is the signing of Austin-based Shearwater. Their album "Palo Santo" was released last year and will be re-issued with 5 re-recorded songs, unreleased tracks and brand new artwork. They will be playing a few shows at SXSW during a North American Tour. The band will be over in the UK this summer with a new album later in the year.
http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/?p=507
http://www.shearwatermusic.com/
Whilst Times New Viking will be promoting their recent release on Siltbreaze, "Present the Paisley Reich", the Columbus, Ohio based band have just signed a deal with Matador in anticipation of a brand new full-length at some point down the line. Their photos make them look extremely young but they play the kind of indie-rock that have you feeling nostalgic for Guided By Voices, Pavement and The Clean. Definitely one of the hotly tipped bands for this year, you should definitely try to see them if you can.
http://www.matadorrecords.com/times_new_viking/
http://www.myspace.com/timesnewviking
The Ponys, fresh off their recent string of successful London shows, will be embarking on a major US tour with no less than four appearances at SXSW (and maybe more). The album "Turn The Lights Out" is released on March 19. Hopefully you've all got copies and are able to cover in some way. They'll be back in May for a UK/Euro tour... Here are some pics from a blistering show at Sonic Cathedral at the Legion last week:
http://underexposed.org.uk/ponys/ponyssc1.htm
http://www.matadorrecords.com/the_ponys
http://www.myspace.com/theponys
And, last but by no means least, Dead Meadow debut songs from their forthcoming album, which is slated for late summer/early Autumn. Read here for stories of haunted studios and moving from Washington DC to Los Angeles - http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/?p=447. We'll be seeing them in the UK for Summer festivals.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PARTICIPATING EVER RECORDS ARTISTS
CORTNEY TIDWELL’s debut full length DONT LET STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP was released in the summer of 2006 and in North America in February 2007. It’s an album in love with dynamics and harmonies, full of a feminine grace throughout which TIDWELL’s spectacular vocals swoop and soar. Comparisons have ranged from The Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser to Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Sinead O’Connor to Bjork. The Sunday Times rated her album as one of their Top Ten of 2007.
“Ms. Tidwell follows the idea of pop music as a slow, unfolding, abstract dream- the kind of thing Mazzy Star used to do well, but it’s a dream rooted in an actual place. Its layered vocal harmonies make it more recognizably American and Southern…but there’s extreme beauty in parts of it.” The New York Times
CYANN & BEN’s first album for Ever Records, SWEET BELIEFS, is an epic and yet intimate album that gives the space rock template a Gallic makeover by adding a much needed romantic grandeur. Our French heroes portray a Paris that is far from the one you see in Amelie: it’s dirty, dark and stressful as much as beautiful and SWEET BELIEFS, with its multi-layered and ambitious sweep, sounds as unsettling as it is irresistible.
“Sweet Beliefs possesses a sweeping beauty, placing Cyann & Ben squarely in a lineage that stretches back through Stereolab and Pink Floyd.” Pitchfork
HOWIE BECK released his third album at the start of 2006. It features guest appearances from Feist, Ed Harcourt and Matt Caws from Nada Surf, with whom HOWIE toured in late 2005. Recent touring (including Scandinavian shows with Josh Rouse) has helped spread the word about what Time Out London described as “an emotionally articulate, beautifully plangent pop affair”. HOWIE is currently producing the new Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene) album and working on a new album for Ever.
"Most remarkable on Howie Beck’s album, however, is the enchanting anthology of melodies that accompany these emotionally devastating stories... (an) inspired and cathartic album." Nick Kent, Liberation
